The effects of alcohol on student performance rates in Portugal

We decided to use the Portuguese flag in order to show the location where our data analysis takes place

Overall our data set shows an "approach student achievement in secondary education of two Portuguese schools. The data attributes include student grades, demographic, social and school related features) and it was collected by using school reports and questionnaires. Two datasets are provided regarding the performance in two distinct subjects: Mathematics (mat) and Portuguese language (por). In [Cortez and Silva, 2008], the two datasets were modeled under binary/five-level classification and regression tasks. Important note: the target attribute G3 has a strong correlation with attributes G2 and G1. This occurs because G3 is the final year grade (issued at the 3rd period), while G1 and G2 correspond to the 1st and 2nd period grades. It is more difficult to predict G3 without G2 and G1, but such prediction is much more useful (see paper source for more details)" (UC irvine). While this is the direct overview of the data set described, we are only looking at certain attributes in this set. Famrel (familly relationship), Walc (weekend alcohol consumption), absences (times absent from school), all of these different attributes will help directly answer our question in order to provide evidence. We will be using Lindsay Poirier's method of research. In her article "Reading Datasets: Strategies for interpreting the Politics of Data Significance", she covers how to read long sets of data with multiple characters and instances. Data bias is the study of how data can be collected and misinterpreted throughout investigations and collecting evidence, Poirier goes into this more by describing "how reading a data set connotatively, involves reading the data set for more than what is explicitely encoded in its variables, values and their definition" (Poirier's). We found a direct correlation between alcohol usage and its affect on students grades. The higher the score for alcohol present the higher amount of classes the student failed.Reading a dataset connotatively involves reading the
data for more than what is explicitly encoded in its var-
iables, values, and their definitions.Reading datasets: Strategies for

Short Summary

Our project covers cases between the different schools in Portugal and how alcohol consumption between family member affects students in this are. We are asking the question "how does alcohol consumption in the students household affect attendance rates, grades, participation and extra curricular at school".
