Project Case Statement: This project focuses on self-creation through social networking in order to better conceptualize identity.

Problem Statement: The Internet masks one’s true identity. How does social networking make faking one’s identity easier?

Research Hypothesis: By the end of the term, our group will produce a short documentary recalling people who have, in the past, faked their identity or lied about themselves on the internet, specifically through social networking. In particular, an “Illness Blogger” named Cara. Cara faked having HIV, cancer (of an un-identified form), and epilepsy. Cara targeted several people, including the singer Kimya Dawson, through the micro-blogging site Tumblr. She used these connections to receive gifts and emotional support.

The first part of the video will explain what Cara did, and then interview one of her “victims,” a young woman named Nikki. Nikki is an actual survivor of breast cancer, and has graciously agreed to be interviewed, but will not speak about Cara specifically. However, 3 “Illness Bloggers” have targeted her—people just like Cara, faking diseases to gain financial and emotional support.

The second part of the video will be a series of interviews from University of Oregon students. We will be asking them questions such as if they’d ever lied about themselves on the internet, or made something up about their identity on an online profile
